ORNGT Annual Scholarship Award

Eligibility

  1. RN Enrolled in a Nursing Program from an accredited institution, which can be related to Perioperative Nursing, for example:
    • Post Graduate Baccalaureate Degree, BScN
    • Masters Degree, Nursing or Health Related
    • Masters Degree, Business Administration
    • PHD, Nursing or Health Related
    • Canadian Health Executive
    • Registered Nurse First Assistant
    • Registered Nurse Anaesthetist/ Anaesthesia Assistant
  2. Completed a surgical mission that was no less than 1wk in length, and with a minimum of 35 hours surgical time, in the current/or previous membership year.
  3. Conducting a research study that is perioperative focused and data collection will be completed no later than the end of the upcoming membership year.
  4. Participating in the Canadian Nurses Association CPN(C) certification exam or recertifying. Year of certification/recertification eligibility is directly related to the 2nd half of the membership year. For example, in the membership year 09/10, members who have paid fees for certification/recertification for the year 2010 are eligible to apply.

Criteria For Application

  • Applicant must be an active ORNGT member for the current and preceding year. Applicant must have attended meetings on a regular basis (3/4 for current membership year and 4/5 for preceding membership year)
  • A Scholarship will be awarded for each of the categories, once only per member per lifetime (i.e. one education, one research, one mission, 1 CPN(C) original certification or recertification, per lifetime)
  • Applicant can apply for more than one scholarship category per year, but are eligible to receive only one scholarship per year
  • Applicant must meet all of the eligibility requirements and their application must contain all of the required attachments in order to be considered

Scoring Criteria

Verification of Regional Membership (Mandatory Requirement)
  1. Is a current active member and has been a member of ORNGT for a minimum of one preceding year and has attended meetings on a regular basis (3/4 for current membership year & 4/5 for preceding membership year)
Autobiographical Letter
  1. Career goals clearly stated and defined
  2. Summary of relevant nursing experience
  3. Future benefits of their education/surgical mission/perioperative focused research/CPN(C) certification or recertification to Perioperative Nursing
  4. Their reason for applying for scholarship
Other Professional Contributions
  1. Certified Perioperative Registered Nurse-CPN(C) (must include CPN(C) certification number & date of certification/recertification)
  2. Member of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO)
  3. Participation in the preparation of the CNA CPN(C) certification exam or facilitated CNA CPN(C) certification exam preparation classes for ORNGT
  4. Has been a presenter (oral or poster) at a Perioperative or related conference
  5. Has published an article in a Perioperative focused Nursing journal
  6. Has served on the executive, a committee or provided leadership in ORNGT
  7. Has served on the executive, a committee or provided leadership in ORNAO
  8. Has served on the executive, a committee or provided leadership in ORNAC
  9. Has served as a preceptor for students &/or new staff

Logistics

  • Potential of 7 Annual Scholarships to be presented each year (4 education, 1 research, 1 mission, 1 CPN(C) certification/recertification)
  • ONE education scholarship will be entitled: “The Wanda Ward Leadership Scholarship”
  • An application form can be obtained on line from ORNGT
  • Each application will be reviewed and evaluated according to the scoring criteria set by ORNGT
  • In order to be considered, an application must meet a minimum score
  • For each category, the applicant with the total highest raw score will be the successful applicant
  • If two or more applicants (in a category) obtain the same total raw score, the individual with the highest professional contribution score will be the successful applicant
  • In the event that two or more applicants (in a category) obtain both the same total raw score and professional contribution score, the successful applicant will be chosen through a name draw to be conducted by the ORNGT President and the Program Convener
  • An unsuccessful candidate may reapply annually
  • Completed applications are to be returned to the President of ORNGT by deadline (May 15th of each calendar year)

  • Awards will be presented at the Annual General Meeting In June
  • Scholarship Awards for education are $750.00 each
  • Scholarship Awards for Surgical Mission and/or Research are $500.00 each
  • CPN(C) certification/recertification award is $250.00
